Set Goals Together With Help From a Family Vision Board

By Renae Gonzalez, publisher of Macaroni Kid Brentwood, Calif. January 5, 2020

It's a new year. The whole family has goals. How can you help your family achieve those goals? Try a family vision board!

Involving the whole family in the creation of a vision board is a fun kid-friendly project that can benefit your family all year long.

Here's how to make a family vision board:

Brainstorm with your family

Think of what you would like to accomplish as a family in the upcoming year. Have everyone make a list of ideas and then share your ideas with each other. Narrow down all of the ideas to a few that you decide as a family are the most important to focus on.

Gather supplies

You do not need much for your vision board ... and there are no rules! Here is a suggested list of supplies -- but be creative! You can use whatever materials you'd like.

  • A poster board
  • Magazines and pictures
  • Stickers/embellishments
  • Tape or glue
  • Scissors

Look for inspiration

Now the fun part! Find pictures, words, or sayings among the magazines and pictures you've collected that remind you of your family's goals and bring you inspiration.

Tip: It works best to cut out all the items you'll need for your board first and then do all the arranging and taping on your board all at the same time.

Tape or glue your cutouts onto the board

Now that you have all of the items you want to place on your board, it's time to put them in place. I always group pictures that are alike in some way -- for instance, all travel pictures go together. Organizing this way helps when you're looking at your goals on your board daily.

Tip: Start gluing or taping on the bigger pictures first. These take up more space and help fill up your board. It's easier to put smaller pictures on top and rearrange the smaller images.

Add stickers and embellishments

Stickers, gems, a border... the sky's the limit. Add some flair!

Display in your house for your whole family to see

This may be the most important step. See, this board is not magic. But there is magic in making it together and having it somewhere that you will see it every day. Putting travel on the board, for instance, will not instantly get a trip booked.

But looking at it daily will remind you that your family thinks travel is important this year. It might make you finally come up with a savings plan for that trip you've been wanting to take, or decide as a family to not eat out this week because that money can be redirected towards a vacation fund.

Making your vision board become a reality takes a lot of hard work -- by everyone! But as a family, you've taken the first step by identifying your goals and creating the board. Now imagine how much fun this time next year will be when your board has come to life. You've got this!
